Kids Homemade Halloween Costume Ideas - Simple and Fun!

By Jennifer Boss

Why waste your time on endless shopping tours trying to find perfect costume looking for kids homemade Halloween costume ideas. The fact is that kids like funny, simple costumes, they like them to be effective and not necessarily very expensive. So if you find yourself in financial difficulties or just don't want to spend way to much money on costume this year this is how you can save some money and still make a cool costume for your kid.

One way is to dress them up as boxes of Popcorns, all you need is one large box covered with white butcher paper, than you need to add red stripes to make it look like a popcorn box. Off course don't forget to make a hole for your child's head, glue some popcorns to the top of the box and you are done.

The weirdest idea is to make old and a bit shabby ideas interesting. You can dress them up into ghosts, but not an ordinary sheet with a single hole for the head and arms. Dress up you little ghost a little with adding some make up and maybe some hair, put on high heals and you get a better and improved version of your old white sheet.

Quasimodo is one of the simple costume ideas. All you need is some foam or a cardboard to build a hunchback. The rest can be easily found in every closet, find some old, worn out clothes, which is several sizes bigger.

The cutest idea for the kids homemade costume idea ever must be a Bag of Jellybeans, and it is quite simple as well. You need one plastic bag, make an opening at the neck for the head, and the legs are fed through small holes cut in the bag. The final step is to fill the interior of the bag with small balloons. They will look adorable in this costume.

Ever heard of a cereal killer? The one lurking the streets on the Halloween!

No? Then follow the instructions, you attach cereal boxes to a shirt, cut a slit in them, glue some plastic knives into the holes, and drip some red paint down the holes in the box, and beware.

And the last will have to be Rubik cubes, or just regular dice. All you need is a large card board box, five different colors, for the dice you only need two, and start painting.

So whatever your choice might be, don't forget to have fun and get your kids involved in created kids homemade Halloween Costume.

Make Your Own Costume Ideas

EASY HOMEMADE KID COSTUMES

Homemade kid costumes are an easy and affordable alternative to store-bought. With just a little vision and imagination, you can create your own original costumes for pennies!

Start out by surfing the internet for costume ideas, then go in search of the materials to make your unique costume ideas a reality.

FINDING GREAT COSTUME MATERIALS

Take stock of your closets for items that can be transformed into kids costumes. I keep a large plastic storage container filled with used clothes that I view as having "costume potential".

These could include plain oversized sweatshirts and kid-sized sweat suits which can be decorated with fabric paint or tape, stuffed, or cut up as needed. Also, long colorful skirts which can be fashioned into capes.

Old sheets can be dyed or spray painted to make a character's robe and discarded scarves and belts to make a sash or headband, well you get the idea...

Yard sales are another valuable resource for "recyclable" kids costumes and dress-up items, as well as old clothes, such as bridesmaid dresses, old suits and uniforms, belts, shoes, hats, scarves, gloves and even costume jewelry.

Children's resale stores and discount clothing outlets often have used Halloween costumes (probably worn only once) and assorted clothing items that you can purchase at very reasonable prices, too.

NO SEW KIDS COSTUMES

If you don't sew, you can still make a great homemade costume using these common household items:

Stapler and Masking Tape or Iron-on Tape - for quick hems

Fabric Glue - for adding embellishments

Black Electrical Tape - for creating different looks:

Striped on a yellow raincoat or sweatshirt for a bumble bee,

A circular pattern on a white sweatshirt for a spider web

Place a stripe of white medical tape down a dark pants leg for a police officer or military costume.

Colored Tape makes similar cool effects: See "How to Make a Kids Costume from a Trash Bag"

PLACARD COSTUMES

Another quick and easy idea for kid costumes is a "placard" costume in which the child wears a hooded sweatshirt and pulls front and back cardboard panels (the placard) on over it.

Placard costumes can be adapted to many different themes, such as:

Ladybug

M & M Chocolate Candy

two kids of different heights can be "plain" and "peanut"!)

Soccerball, Basketball or Baseball

Apple or Pumpkin

The Best Harry Potter Costume Ideas for Adults and Children

With all of the success of the Harry Potter series of books by J.K. Rowling, it's no wonder why so many people want to dress up in Harry Potter costumes for Halloween and other events. After all, when someone really enjoys a character or a whole cast of characters, whether it is from a book, television show, or movie, they often want to emulate them. This can be done relatively easily with a Harry Potter costume.

There are two main categories of Harry Potter Halloween costumes. You can either dress up as Harry Potter himself, or as one of the many children who attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Either way, you are sure to have a lot of fun with the occasion. The great thing about this is that these costumes can be for both adults and children. The adult Harry Potter costume is essentially the exact same as the child Harry Potter costume since the styles are so universal.

When you are going for the look of a regular student at Hogwarts, there are some things that you definitely need. First of all, a robe is a necessity. Your robe should be black and made of heavy cloth, such as wool. It should also have a hood, although you probably won’t end up using it. Next, you should have a colored button down shirt with a tie on underneath. Think about it. This is a costume for a school uniform. It will be a bit stricter than other costumes might be.

If you want to dress up your Harry Potter Costume a bit, you can also get a scarf. In the movies and books, the children wear a scarf that has the colors of whatever house they live in at the school. The main one is for Gryffindor, which is maroon and gold. The scarf will have wide stripes of these colors.

Now, if you want an authentic Harry Potter costume where you are dressed as the actual character, you will need two additional things. First, a big thing that makes Harry Potter special is his scar. It is a scar in the shape of a lightning bolt that is right on his forehead. You’ll also need glasses. The rounder the frames, the better.

For added authenticity to your Harry Potter costume, you should consider making a wand. You could also even carry around an old fashioned style broom that you could pretend to ride. With this costume, you will be able to represent your favorite literary character.
